Throughout 2019, the BBI Leos group worked hard to complete different activities and actions to give back to the community. The Leos group goal was to spread positivity and to make the community a better place. One of the first activities of the year was Fruju Friday. After four weeks of running the fundraiser, the Leos group managed to raise approximately $620. This was a tremendous effort put in to help Kids First Hospital Charity.

During term two, another action group organised and hosted a beach cleanup at Bucklands Beach. The group planned for 4 weeks before the action was finalised. Their goal was to help clean up the environment and give back to the community. The group of students gathered equipment and headed off towards the beach during lunchtime. The cleanup lasted for approximately 1 hour and they all managed to collect a significant amount of rubbish.

During week 5 of term 3, the Leos groups worked together to host a week that was dedicated to donating cans to the All Saints Church Foodbank. Initially, the goal was to raise approximately 1500 cans to be able to provide food for the less fortunate. This goal was exceeded by fundraising approximately 2000 cans in total within seven days. With the help of teachers and BBI students, the cans were delivered to the food bank at the end of the week. The fundraiser was extremely successful.

We would like to say a big thank you to Miss Leeuw, Miss Unkovich, Mrs Ford, and Mr Robinson for helping out with organising the groups and leading the P5 activity.

The BBI Leos Group is a period 5 activity that involves organising fundraisers for charities, helps communities outside of school and coordinates fun activities for our students. This year, the Leos group have completed numerous tasks and projects which have contributed to our school, our immediate community and worldwide charities.

Term 1 began with Faithfulness being elected as president of the Leos group and she is in charge of making sure everyone is on track and  provides help if needed. In the Leos group we have a vice president, photographer, treasurer and secretary which help to run the Leo’s group along with Miss Leeuw, Miss Unkovich and Mrs Ford.

In Term 2, our students also organised a beach clean helping to reduce the rubbish filtering into our beautiful coastlines and marine life habitats. Students had a successful trip and made a huge difference in our local community. Over the course of the year we have run fundraisers like Fruju Friday and selling items at the school dance to raise money to purchase activity packs for the kids at Kidz First Hospital. Our students have created a range of activity packs for the kids who spend large periods of time in the childrens’ ward.

During Term 3, we worked with the period 5 Food Extension Group to help bake for a local retirement home. Our students donated ingredients so the group could bake up a storm for the residents. The cell phones collection group oversaw the promotion for the collection supporting sustainable coastlines who recycle old phones and the money raised from recycling goes towards helping our coastlines flourish. The glasses collection saw old glasses recycled and rehomed by the Lions Club to eye specialists in the Pacific Islands.

Over the course of the year, we have achieved huge accomplishments and helped many communities by fundraising for good causes. Every student who takes part in the Leos Group is making a change in the wider community and it gives them satisfaction to know they have made a difference. Throughout the year, we have organised a glasses collection, cell phone collection, a beach clean-up, Fruju Friday’s, social clubs, baking to fundraise and we’ve even started some knitting.

On reflection of our service, fundraising and contributions to our local community we have come to value and enjoy the resources given to us by the school and our families to be thankful for. We are lucky to have and giving back to help others. We are all very proud to be a part of the 2018 Leos Group.
