On July 13,2010 under the sponsorship of the Frederiksted Twin City Lions Club, The Frederiksted Twin City Alpha Leo Club received their charter. This Club was made possible by our tenacious Lion’s Club Advisors. The official induction and installation of officers was conducted on October 30, 2010. Fifteen members were inducted into our brand new club by the region chair, Maruri Grant MJF of the Tortola Lions Club. Senator Raymond Richards of the Virgin Islands Legislature served as the guest speaker and encouraged the Leos to serve their community well and continue to grow as leaders in the organization.
Our charter President was Leo Jelani Cherubin who served for two consecutive years, charter Vice President Zelde Laurencin, Charter Secretary Johonothan Doward, Charter Treasure Henson Greene II, and Charter Director Chasen Richards. As a new club our experience began alongside our sponsoring Lions, as we assisted them at their annual Partnership walk-a-ton to promote Organ & Tissue Transport and their Annual diabetes Health fair. In 2011, we began to get into our own projects and fundraising activities off the ground. Our very first fundraiser was a car wash, and we also operated a concession stand at a local concert event. In 2011, we also began to made new traditions when we began assisting at the Virgin Island Special Olympics and the American Cancer society 24-hr relay for life. Since then these two projects have became our Annual Service projects.
As a Leo, service to our community is what we live for. Our other service projects include donating food to a local soup kitchen, preparing meals for residents of a residence for the mentally challenged, book donations and readings to local head-start classes, water distribution to elderly residents in an elderly community, presentation of toiletries to the residents at a local shelter and planning as well as organizing an annual back to school fun day for Summer campers with our sponsoring Lions Club. Being a Leo, has taught us many valuable life skills as well as lessons. Within the club we have learned the value of teamwork and how effective it can be. We have learned how to improve on our own skills through service volunteering. And we have grown individually, creating a bond. After each meeting we regroup for fellowship with the inclusion of board games, movie nights, and discussions. Outside meetings we get together for night outs.
