Story of successfully conducting ‘I Support’ campaign for flood victims in Siraha
Kathmandu, 24th August, 2017,
On 28th Shrawan, Saturday, there was heavy rainfall throughout the nation. Terai belt, being allocated in the lower part, faced unprecedented calamity of flood induced by the torrential rain. Thousands of houses were destroyed, many lost their lives, and numerous livestock were drowned. It was a disheartening moment for Nepalis all over the world.
We, groups of youths, couldn’t turn blind eye to the suffering and misery of our brothers and sisters in Terai. Thus, we (Leo Club of Kathmandu members) sat for a meeting on 29th Shrawan, Sunday, and took an initiative to start ‘I Support’ campaign. The campaign was started to support and contribute in whatever way possible to the people who are in need of help.
The meeting was held in District Office under the leadership of Leo Anil Burja Magar, District President of Leo District Council 325 A2, also the Chairman of Katha Event Company (partner for the campaign). All the plan of actions was discussed in the cooperation of Program Initiator and Coordinator Anil Burja Magar Program, and Campaigners Shanta Khadka, Sunil Burja Magar, Ram Kumar Shah, Rupesh Kumar Yadav and Anjal Niraula among other members.
Without any further delay, ‘I Support’ group was divided into different teams was deployed for various parts of the Kathmandu Valley e.g. Newroad, Baneshwor, Koteswor, Busparks, Bhrikutimandap, Ratnapark, etc. Within 4 days, the team was able to collect Rs. 1,11,000 funds in cash, and new clothes of Rs. 5,25,000 (supported by a business house).
After packing of relief materials, we ‘I Support’ campaign members moved towards our destination in Siraha to serve on 5th of Bhadra 2074.
Having left Kathmandu at 8:30 AM, we reached to Lahan at 5:45 PM after a long journey. Lions and Leo Club of Lahan City supported the team with Lodging and fooding there.
In the early morning of 6th Bhadra, the team led towards Kilathi, Kolari, one of the remote village of Saptari District where none had reached for relief works.
They were very happy by seeing us as their ray hope. The campaign distributed food package and new clothes to as many as 400 families of flood victims there.
We are highly motivated and encouraged for successfully conducting the campaign. After the successful completion of the relief materials distribution program, we are planning to organize health camp in Saptari in the next phase. Also, we are planning to build houses for flood victims.
