This fall, our Leos have been busy working on service projects as well as having fun together. Our biggest service project this year took place earlier this month when our club joined up with our local Lions affiliate (Ann Arbor Host Lions Club) to help pack up school supplies and thanksgiving treats for the holiday season. With collaboration from the UofM Delta Gamma Sorority, we managed to fill more than 8 bags of school supplies and food that will be used by kids and families in our communities in need. Our project was a huge success, with over 11 participants; we were able to do our jobs and then some.

Other important events that our members have participated in include, but are not limited to, the Ann Arbor Host Lions Club Peace Essay Contest, UofM Veterans Wheelchair Basketball Game, speaking engagements at the UofM Delta Gamma Sorority, the UofM Medical School, and the MI Eye Bank Delta Gamma Foundation “What’s Your Vision” event. We are extremely proud of the individuals within our club that have volunteered their time and talents to make these events successful. We recognize these individuals as gifted members of our Leo Community and hope to see future accomplishments from them all. The WISD Leo Club is a youth service and social organization that is sponsored by the Ann Arbor Host Lions Club and the Washtenaw Intermediate School District. Anyone ages 12-18 can join the WISD Leo Club.  The WISD Leo Club members function as a working board.  We meet monthly at the Neutral Zone in Ann Arbor to plan social and service opportunities within the community.Macintosh HD:Users:Andy:Desktop:IMG_8607.JPG

Leos join Lions in Hopes of Brightening the Spirits of Overseas Warriors.

By Austin Shepherd

This December, the Ann Arbor Host Lions and WISD Leos clubs did something extra special

for 2013. The 2 groups teamed up to help create a special holiday experience for American soldiers based in the middle east. The 2 groups joined up to create care packages and letters for the soldiers. Our focus was to give to those who may not have close family to send them gifts. Our primary goal was to create happiness by giving them something they can enjoy when not out on the battlefield of war.

Our efforts were a huge success. Our group created over a dozen boxes.

All packed with goodies, letters, and plenty of small toys and footballs. Our work was done in hopes that soldiers could feel happier during this holiday season, knowing that they would be getting something special for Christmas.

Thanks to all of our Leos who joined us for this event. We are so glad that you all could participate and hope to see more great work in the future. For information on future events, or if you’d like to join our program, contact us at amyshep4@gmail.com or austinshepgoblue@gmail.com

Ann Arbor, Michigan November 12, 2013

Dear Ann Arbor Host Lions Club and Ms. Donna Posont,

Thank you for hosting us at the Leslie Science Center on Sunday, November 2nd  for the Birding  By Ear Event.  I am so glad that as a new  member of the WISD Leo’s Club I was able to experience this event.  Thirty people attended this event on a crisp and clear afternoon.  We toured different bird enclosures and learned about raptors.  My favorite bird there was the Peregrine falcon. Did you know that it can dive at speeds of up to 220 miles per hour and is the fastest bird in Michigan and the world?  Once we had toured the bird enclosures we went inside where a specialist talked to us about how owls have the ability to fly without making noise. This was a great opportunity to learn about raptors.  This experience taught me and the other Leo ‘s many things about raptors. Did you know that vultures do not have hair on their heads so that their hair does not get messy when they eat?

Regards,

Leo Neil Beveridge and the WISD Leo Club

WISD Leos Prowl Into Action!

By Leo Austin Shepherd

This year has thus far brought many fun tricks and treats to our new Leo’s Club. Our group has been teaming up with other organizations to create a fun-filled experience for our participants. We started out our new year with an art p

roject on behalf of the University of Michigan Investing in Abilities Week Art Show. We displayed our, Matisse inspired, artwork during this event. We then embarked on a costume bowling party with the Ann Arbor Blind Bowlers Association at Bellmark Lanes in Ann Arbor. Our group along with several younger kids and adults all had a blast bowling with some of the best visually impaired bowlers in the state.

This past weekend, our group participated in a raptors festival with several other blind birders at the Leslie Science Center, as part of the nationally acclaimed Birding By Ear Program.  We were all very intrigued by all the spectacular birds they had to offer.  We even got to touch a dead Great Horned Owl and feel several other birds’ wings and feet. There is still much more to come. Our group is constantly finding new ways to have fun and help out our community. We are extremely happy with the progress we’ve made and are looking forward to a bright future!

Our Leo’s Club is always looking for new members. If you would like to get involved, please e-mail us at amyshep4@gmail.com or KChris@wash.k12.mi.us
