You would have seen the Lion’s club logo throughout our local area and city, even if you haven’t really noticed it before. I know we always saw it but we never really understood what they actually did before we joined Leos. We thought it was basically just older people having an excuse to get together and get more Facebook friends but we were totally wrong!!
Our sponsoring club, the GVK Lions Club are the volunteer organisation that runs community functions such as the Christmas carols in the park and the hills carnival.
They look after and participate in several projects including the Children of Courage appeal, Lions Medical Research Personality contest which raises money for vaccination research, and the Brisbane Marathon. They collect optical glasses to help people in third world countries see the beautiful around them. They organise specialist equipment for disabled children so that they can actually go to school and learn.
Ok, you are probably thinking, isn’t the Lion’s club for let’s say, older people?
Well, we are not Lions, we are their cubs; We are following in their footsteps. We are guided by what they do, but we have our own purpose and our own agenda.
Now imagine, just for a moment, a world without volunteers, or clubs like the Lions.
People would not be able to see. People would not have food to survive, no blankets to keep warm at night. There would be no funding for important medical research. There are people who would not be able to live the same life as the rest of you in this very room.
When you think about it, you have a roof over your head, more than three meals a day, a warm bed, and quality education.
How would you feel if you didn’t have those luxuries?
If you had the opportunity to change the lives of others, to make a difference and to make them smile;
Would you?
In 2002, 28% of people your age volunteered for their community.
8 years later, in 2010, ONLY 9.5% did any kind of voluntary work.
I’m not sure what happened in those 8 years…. But obviously technology took over.
We believe that our generation, from year 8 to 12 especially, can do so much more, be so much more. There are people out there who need our help.
3 months ago, 6 students from Ferny Grove State High School took it upon themselves to make a difference and to give the teenagers in our local area an amazing OPPORTUNITY to help others within their community.
The Golden Valley Keperra Leos Club - a club of like-minded people all with the same goal.
We are providing the youth of today with an opportunity for development and contribution as both an individual and as a club.
We are responsible members of the local, national and international community. We are leading for life.
We raise money for those who need it, volunteer our time for the benefit of the community, and give EVERYONE the opportunity to GROW as both an INDIVIDUAL and within a TEAM. We are a family, helping each other achieve common and personal goals.
And we would like YOU to join us!
We want people who want to do something big. People who want to help the community through every disaster and joy. People who will give their time for another person who needs it.
People who have an urge to become a STRONGER human being, people who want to INCREASE their leadership and organisational skills, people JUST LIKE YOU.
Everyone has a little Lion in them, let it out, find your roar. Take the time to find out what you can do to help, what you yourself can gain from helping others and find out how truly inspirational you can be.
